Explained - revealed

What springs to mind when you think of a keynote speaker? A car stereo system? Well, at least I did until I learnt about keynote speakers! Keynote speakers vary from speaker to speaker- so here’s a few pointers.

Keynote speakers- what do they do?

The primary speaker at an event or conference is the keynote speaker. Comedians for example will warm the audience up before a keynote speaker at a less formal after dinner event. They will be the prominent public speaker at a formal conference. At different events the keynote speaker’s purpose can vary.

Standing up and speaking a large audience is the job of a public or conference speaker. Normally there are intending to purvey a particular message. It might be a motivational message for a work force, or a humorous message.

How much does a keynote speaker cost?

Fees for keynote speakers can drastically vary. The speakers reputation within the conference and event world is generally quite decisive. While a local celebrity might turn up for free, a celebrity speaker could cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. Fees are normally charged for the event and travel costs. If you feel nervous about this, you may consider approaching a speakers agency to help. The benefits of using a speakers bureau has massive positives. They can normally pick the bad from the good speakers. Negotiating on your behalf should also be possible if you give them a clear budget. The most suitable speaker can then be selected, as well as freeing you up from having to make arranagements for the speaker to attend.

What makes a successful keynote speaker?

Sending on a boring speaker to address thousands of people wouldn’t be a good idea! Not unless you really like torturing your staff or guests for an evening! Professional keynote speakers will possess lots of positive traites.

Confidence by the bag full is a must. A keynote speaker must keep their bottle when speaking to a large audience. Confidence after all, is infectious.

Key as well, is charisma. We don’t listen to boring people. We do on the other hand pay attention to inspiring people. Taking them as an example, a charismatic speaker is more likely to influence the audience. This is particularly useful when trying to sell something, or give your staff a kick up the backside!

Finally, without knowledge and experience of what they are speaking about, a keynote speaker would be hard pushed to deliver an effective speech. Generally a keynote speaker that is talking about motivation, will be a motivated person. Sports speakers should generally have won at least something. A business speaker should be a successful business person.
