Most of us understand going in that decorating a home from scratch is not an inexpensive endeavor. Don’t let yourself get so caught up in your project that you forget to pay attention to the money leaving your bank account. Don’t worry too much if you don’t have a lot of money to use on your home decorating project. There are a lot of things that you can use for decorating that don’t cost a lot of money.

Save floor space by putting your bed in the corner of the room. Don’t point all your furniture at the tv-create an atmosphere for conversation by pointing your “seating” furnishings at each other. Let the television sit in the corner. Use decorative countertop containers for your kitchen utensils instead of leaving them in drawers. Moving things to new spaces is usually all it takes to make an entirely new look. If you must have original works of art, create them yourself! Can you think of a better way to fill your home with original art than to make it yourself? Even the cost of art supplies is cheaper than the cost of an original painting or sculpture by someone else. You can create your own paintings and sculptures when you have the time-nobody says you have to follow a schedule. Get your family in on the fun by letting them create things to display. Your kids’ bedrooms can easily be decorated using the art work that the kids make themselves. Check out a few “how to draw” books from the library and you’re on your way! Have you thought about using the gifts that people have given you? Everybody has a few decorative items shoved into closets and drawers that only come out when the giver comes over. Why not just display them all the time? There is no law that says you have to keep them displayed for all eternity but it is a nice (and free!) way to decorate your home while you save up for the more expensive things that you’ve been looking at. This way you won’t have to quickly locate the items that your great aunt gave you when she shows up unaccounced on your doorstep and wants to come in to visit with you. Take a look at your friends houses-you might find some great decorating ideas there. Look at how they decorate and then ask yourself “how can I do this for the money I have in my wallet right now? You’ll soon find that home decorating does not have to cost a lot of money. Many people find that they don’t spend a single dollar when they decorate!
